Audra McDonald is unparalleled in the breadth and versatility of her talent as an actress and a performer. She was the recipient of record-breaking Six Tony Awards two Grammy Awards as well as An Emmy Award in 2015 she was named as one of Times magazine's top 100 influential people. She also received the National Medal of Arts--America's highest award for accomplishment within the field--from the President Barack Obama. A dazzling soprano, and an unrivalled talent to tell the truth, she is as much at home on Broadway as well as on the stage as in her film and TV roles. A musically inclined family, McDonald was raised within Fresno California and received her training in classical singing at New York's Juilliard School. After graduating, she won her debut Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured actress in a Musical for Carousel at the Lincoln Center Theater (1994). In the following four years she was awarded two additional Tony Awards for the category of the featured actress. She was in Broadway premieres Terrence McNally's musical Ragtime and Terrence McNally's play Master Class in 1996. It was an amazing total of three Tony Awards by the time she reached the age of 30. She won her fourth Tony acting alongside Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun and In 2012, she was awarded her fifth--and her first for the category of leading actress in the role of her lead for her role in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. In her role as the Tony Awards' most decorated performer, she had the chance to make Broadway history when she was awarded her sixth Tony Award portraying Billie Holiday as Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill. This part also gave her the opportunity to perform for her Olivier Award nominee 2017 London West End debut. In addition to setting the record for the most successful wins for an actor, she also became the first to win distinctions across all four acting categories. McDonald has also appeared on The Secret Garden (1993), Marie Christine (1999), Henry IV (2004) The 110th Shade (2007 Twelfth night (2009) and the film Shuffle Along A Musical Shock: the Making of the Musical Shock that premiered in 1921 and everything That Followed (2016). McDonald was the first actress to receive an award in every one of the acting categories. McDonald's first role as a dramatic TV actor came with the winner of the Peabody Award on the CBS show Having Our Say, The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years. In 1999, she appeared with Kathy Bates in ABC's acclaimed remake of Annie. Additionally, she was regular roles in NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit in 2000. McDonald, who earned an Emmy Award nomination in 1999 due to her part on the HBO remake of the Pulitzer Prize-winning show Wit with Emma Thompson was back on network TV in 2003 with the drama about politics Mister Sterling. The film is directed by Emmy Award-winning Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. At the beginning of 2006, she joined WB's The Bedford Diaries. The next year she was a recurring actor on NBC's Kidnapped. McDonald was awarded a 4th Emmy award in recognition of her performance in HBO's film special of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill in 2016. In 2021, she starred with Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale as part of The Bite, a pandemic drama produced in collaboration with Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios. In 2009, she was the U.S. Attorney Liz Lawrence on CBS's drama about lawyers The Good Wife. In 2018, McDonald returned to her role as Liz Reddick as a regular on Paramount+'s The Good Fight. She received three Critics Choice Award nods for the role. She also appeared as a guest on Julian Fellowes's historical drama The Gilded Age.
